I think the lowest is 550 for multimode and 2km for single mode. and you don't need repeaters what you change is the transciever (some small connector you plug into the switch) I think quite a number of structured cabling companies can do this for you quite cheaply plus everything is locally available. hi, @kenneth, what kind of range does fiber have before you need a repeater?

Considering you can't do copper ethernet comfortably over 100 meters, then your copper options will be limited to non Ethernet ones. You can go with a 4 wire copper trunk and have an E1 (2mb) between the 2 points but you need dte's to connect to your ethernet switch. On the other hand fiber will easily go 500m and you can get entry level fiber switches below 20k on both sides. You will need to splice it initially but that's a one time cost.
I would settle for wireless even b4 copper, too much headache for to little capacity. But fiber is best.

he he he. all am saying is that your thinking is interesting, sound like something that would be tried out in an AT&T lab. However, sadly, we are a consumer of R&D. Our universities are busy been ISO Certified and most of our local companies find it cheaper to import technology.
