1) Booted into single user mode (SUM) as per your advice, *chose option 1 from the boot loader's menu* 2) Mounted the root partition of the file system while changing its status so as to allow write operations besides the read privileges # *mount -u /root *
The above part should be # *mount -u / * The previous command does not change the status of the entire file system but that of the folder named /root alone Martin. 3) Restored the previous copy of the graphical server's configuration file
from the /etc folder, # *cd /etc/X11* && *mv xorg.conf.previous xorg.conf * 4) Removed the flag file, which in my case was /var/.runxsetup instead of /var/.startxgui. I actually did a move operation just in case I needed to restore it later for whatever reason, # *mv /var/.runxsetup /etc/X11/.runxsetup.old* Interestingly, this file contains a single line, a command I presume with the contents *RUNX* 5) Rebooted my machine. # *reboot*

Besides my rather unfortunate event described above, BSD families of O.Ss are rather rock solid and quite advanced in my opinion. I would urge Linux and Windows users to give P.C BSD, FreeBSD's "Ubuntu", a try. It is a _very_ nice system. Mac users do not need to do anything since Macintosh OS X *is* largely based on FreeBSD technology (with a Mach4 microkernel? and a new Aqua GUI).

True, with *BSD, they use rc.subr, not run levels. I honestly played with Linux run levels many years ago. I generally don't run Linux. I am a *BSD guy.
Booting into SUM is an option when the boot screen displays. I think it's option #4. When you choose it, you press enter and get presented with the default shell. At that point filesystems are read-only so:
mount -u / cd /etc/X11 ls -al cp xorg.conf.bak xorg.conf exit # go to MUM

The other problem is that I cannot switch into a virtual terminal. There is an issue with the Intel drivers provided with PC BSD, the feature (V.Ts) is not supported yet. So if I do a ctrl + F1, ctrl + F2, ........ ctrl + F6, X11 server hangs up and I cannot access the command line and I am forced to power down the laptop.
Another thing that I am sure you are aware of is that *BSDs do not have run-levels like Linux so I cannot modify the initrd.conf scripts and say go to run-level 1, 2 or 3 on start-up in order to troubleshoot the problem further. I have seen some pointers here: http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.os.pcbsd.testing/7461 The comment indicates that I can default to the VESA generic drivers for the time being in order to get usable but non-optimal graphics.
I will try that out and see if I can trick the system to once again take my proper card drivers. Else I will keep rebooting the machine until it accepts to pick my drivers. Thank you for your advice.

Yesternight I accidentally fumbled with the system on my laptop and ended up sending instructions to it so that the graphics configuration wizard started on the next reboot. Right now, I only see the screen that asks if the video driver and other monitor details identified (aspect ratio, resolution and number of pixel depth) identified are correct. They _are_ all correct but the system just goes blank when you ask it to save the fresh configurations.
I am stuck now and kind-of too smug to boot into the Windows Seven partition. In any case, none of the tools I need can be found there. I have visited the PC-BSD forums but it seems their servers are "experiencing technical difficulties" at the moment ( try this http://wiki.pcbsd.org/index.php/Display ). Has anyone had a similar problem before and how did she / he get over it? Normally I would restart my machine and go through the whole procedure. This has not worked up to now for me.
