Most probably you never got to tinker with the previously-available work-arounds that whatsapp has been fighting all along - Whatsap Pidgin plugin - Whatsapple - Wassap - Android Emulators et al Most of those were far much practical compared to this official pain; hence the "Dog in a manger" tag.
