1. Download osx mavericks or whatever your old mac supports.
2. Get an 8GB usb stick.
3. Follow these instructions to make the usb stick an  osx installer
4. Reboot and profit.

I've had two MacBook Pros that did give me the 'flashing question mark over folder' error. In both cases, I had to return the device to manufacture for a mobo replacement.
