Martin, chances are if the core 2 duo performs better, it does so with the sacrifice of more power. If I were you I would go for the core i3 though its about 1.5 yrs old now; its a Nahalem architecture. 

I would look out for a Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge as they are less power hungry and integrated GPU.
