I have the Amazon Fire TV for 12 K and Roku 3 for 12k as well. I can show you how to config the Roku 3 for streaming services ( all you need is an additional TP-Link ) which I can get you about 4k

I use plex on my desktop to play movies and series using the device, so I've never really had a need to connect an external hdd. Here's more info on plex, it turns your pc (or external hdd) into a home theater server.
