I find myself constantly seeking to make the tech I work with faster, often times breaking things, It would be good if there were like minded skunks here with whom to share mistakes

I can simply say one thing: Borrow from Cisco's network Lifecycle Services Framework.

Prepare -> Plan -> Design -> Implement -> Operate -> Optimize.

Scalability is what you are looking for.
