have you added the ip of the Linux box to be one of the relay servers?

Have you authenticated the Linux server? i.e. user name and password

from the linux server can you run smtp commands to the exchange server?

Hi Felix,

I see no reason at all for this to happen, if other clients on your network can send outbound e-mails via your Exchange 2007.
Anyway, you need to adjust the logging level for your SMTP service upwards and see why it's happening.

PS: It's always wise to accompany such questions with output from your logs to enable people make informed opinions, not guesses.
