Thanks for the very detailed responses (im still rereading the acronyms) but just to be clear and using the example i would be relating to....
The government is now allowing me to move change my car to any number plate, but my insurance (read mpesa) is usually referenced to my chassis number so that if i change my number plate ill still be able to retain the insurance details, rigt?

The MSISDN is mapped to the IMSI. MSISDN is what the subscribers know. Its like knowing your car number plate but it's hard to remebre Chasis number/Engine number . Both IMSI and MSISDN are unique. So you can migrate your MSISDN but keep your old IMSI meaning you are on your old network for charging and call setup issues etc
