[Skunkworks] Microsoft Licensing

Dear Skunkers; If I bought an old compaq with license sticker, and had a way to legally have the license back to the system, fully activated as was while at the previous users, is it illegal? I know they normally remove the hdd's but the license should be legal, right? I'm about to help a desperate friend but don't want to end up in trouble at some point. Your views?
