The Mac App Store will launch before the next release of OS X.
I am seeing a scenario where Apple has to approve all applications that run on the iPhone and Mac, creating a secure OS with lesser freedom but much ease of use.
Developers have an option of distributing OS X apps through the Mac App Store (subject to Apple's approval) or via their own channels. ~gms
