Do not use mysql connector. It has been deprecated and the php website clearly indicates this.

Couple of ideas in my head.
1. You might be running mysql client but not the server.
2. If running on Lampp they normally have issues with mysqld.sock tunneling. If so try uninstall LAMPP and Install LAMP separately
