Now, Collins, I am the techie type, but I still don't know which Ubuntu I should go for. Can I get all those*buntu wrapped into one, much like Windows 7 Ultimate?? Which one is the Ubuntu Ultimate?
This just phase 1 of your research and the answer is there are a number of mature Linux Desktop O/S's out there and you have a list of which ones are in the top 5 (at least) based on usage, support, package management, etc. o The next step (if i were you) would be to list down all the features/functionality that i expect from the OS am looking for based on the following; - What hardware specs are you planning to install the OS which one is more resource hungry and which one is not. - Support for Drivers, etc based on hardware specs, upgrade history etc; o Secondly, list down the applications that will be used mostly on the desktop both the custom internal apps and general ones. - From here you can find out which OS performs best on the general most used apps - Which OS performs (ease of install and stability) on the custom internal apps. - Go through the list of things that you have encountered as problems on a Desktop environment and test if they work on the OS or not. They could be as simple as handling sleep and wake on external drives of a specific vendor, etc. Or support for vendor specific USB devices/Hubs, Printing, etc. Most of the time its more of the subtle issues that makes one settle on an OS and not the general stuff. At the end of the day, you will be able to support your decision for going for a specific variant over others. Hope that helps. Michuki.
