That is normal with IMAP4 account. Not POP3. In POP3 account, you even have a .pst file with all the e-mails. Can you please see if you have one and what is the size? File -> Data File Management -> select the data file then click "Open Folder". You initial description tells about an IMAP4 account setup, not POP3.
