@Calvin, you mean the app has no documentation on INSTALLation and configuration at all? Not surprising though, for some apps, especially if the developers want you to pay for support.
Anyway, reading through the files would sometimes reveal all that to you. At one point I faced such a problem and had to try and find which file contained the settings by looking through all files.
So try something like this:

cd /path/to/the/source-code
find . -type f -exec grep -li 'smtp' {} \;

That will list all files containing the word 'smtp'. You can then look at each of the files individually to see in which one you need to put the settings.
