@Laban - so what if the watermark is detected? You are talking from the technology perspective and not what the technology is supposed to do/or help to do. If I have my watermarked video, even if you are able to detect it, you are still pirating it and the process of getting that you are pirating is the important aspect here, not that you can detect it!

Even if it's invisible, it will leave a digital footprint that can be detected.. Have a look at this steg module: http://blog.wolfram.com/2010/07/08/doing-spy-stuff-with-mathematica/ http://andorian.blogspot.com/2011/07/dirt-cheap-steganography.html You can't see any differences between the hen images yet the data is there and can be detected.

@Labo - thats why its an invisible water mark, that takes care of issue 2. Issue 1 is not really an issue since if I have the DVD and ran it on the watermark software, it will not show any watermark and thats not a problem since it is really not piracy as such.

And there is your solution. Make the media available and cheap and pap! I highly doubt if after you have finished paying for that expensive HD camera you should continue charging expensively. It worked for JuaCali he sold his album for 100 and he said sales were okay. The plan also works in India where there are different classes of movie halls. Que: How is the guy copying the DVD/CD making a profit ? he has bought the same CDs made covers and distributed. so all you have to do is beat him at it

Two issues that I can see: 1) What if I as an end user of tv station one made a copy off the airwaves and distributed it (Ignore the chance that a broadcast rip might not be as good as a dvd rip)? You'd go to tv station one and claim piracy yet they had nothing to do it with... ergo they can use that argument in court. 2) If it's a watermark, end users will find it and scrub it. All they have to do is look for anomalies in the frames... See http://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=1288902
The point is, if you can do find a technical solution, users will always find a way around it. See http://gigaom.com/video/drm-fail-five-broken-copy-protection-schemes-2/
Now loop in Adobe encrypted epubs, the kindle format, the Sony's rootkit fiasco and you can see where this is going... If media was relatively cheap, available and unencumbered, more people would opt to buy/rent the legit copy.

By the way, my scope of work is limited to the local content being broadcast on TV, for example, the recent Night of a thousand laughs concert presented a big problem since the DVD's were supposed to be resold to specific TV stations in the region and they did find themselves in the black market. What would have happened in this scenario is that we would have sold to say 5 local TV stations who are authorized to show it sometime in future and if any copy found itself in the black market, then we would go and buy it and run it through the watermarker and be able to identify which of the 5 stations did the duplicate and then institute legal action against the specific station.
This would never be a solution for your good old series downloadable from the net, but without digressing from the topic - the original post was actually based on content you have created (or in charge thereof) and not just some stuff on the internet.
