
Reddit seems to have a good answer. Been using monitors for years, never really wondered why. Here's the first answer: The answer is viewing distance. Monitors are designed to be viewed from a closer distance where display quality is more noticeable. TVs on the other hand are meant to be viewed from further away so it is ok to give them lower pixel density. Lower pixel density means lower production costs.
