Long response but the bottom line is this: Think of all the rest whose rights you want to infringe just because you don't want to take the responsibility of self-censorship.

Longer version:

I believe people should take responsibility for what they watch on TV. There are tonnes of channels. If you don't like one, switch! Have you ever thought of someone else who actually was looking forward to that movie/prog and is actually 18 and above? If you cannot control your household please don't take it out on the rest.
Remember, the role of the board is not to ban 18 and over movies but to enforce the rule that the movie is correctly rated. A TV station should not be able to pass off an R Rated movie as PG. But the 18 and above viewers have a RIGHT to watch those boobs and sex on TV. They earned it by virtue of age. And it's the board's mandate to protect this right as well.

The TV station has an obligation to show clearly the age rating of what they are about to air. If they don't you have every right to complain to the board.
Once they show the rating, it is now upon you, as an adult, to make informed decision. Continuing to watch the show means you have accepted the responsibility that comes with it.

So how do they do the rating?

I heard that TVs must submit the movies they intend to air to the board for the board's rating and approval. If the board deems the movie too raunchy of course they will block it.

Frankly this is why I stopped watching local stations. The nudity and profanity is part of the movie, it's part of what makes it complete. Would I watch it with my parents? Hell no.

Food for thought:
a) Sexuality is all about context. In some cases, the soaps are more sexual than the nudity in movies. Remember our ancestors (up until quite recently, I might add) used to operate topless. But it was not considered sexual. Same way you could see a woman breastfeeding and you dont "feel" anything (if you do, you are a perv. Get help!)

b) Censorship is really for the masses. To bypass the censorship you only need to get out of mass media channels. DSTV, Internet, etc. There you are in control. Strangely enough, this also gives you more control in terms of household content viewership.

c) As for heading toward wrong direction, I remember in the 90s,KBC, the only national TV then, usedto play lots of movies with nudity on Saturday nights. So this is not a new trend coming up. In fact TV station have become extremely soft of late.
Why are they advising us as viewers, yet themselves can't regulate the media who influences a lot of people than dvd's on the street?  I watched media degenerate into this for the last 10 years and i didn't speak.- then who should or should not?

Disclaimer: I am seriously getting fed up with this "moral value" argument every-time someone wants to impose his/her dislikes on the rest of us.

Thanks @Tech,

You deviated from the context abit though.... and also "content" isn't just about sex, but also cult, crime, violence, language, class, religion, lifestyle, social engagement etc etc
Am not questioning or saying what or who should - mine goes to the mandate. And if not the KFCB that does content who does in KE.

Back to the question:

My questions are rather general and not targeting "anyone in any way ;)"
  • Who are they telling NOT to buy unclassified films off the street.
  • What is a "film" in their definition.
  • Is online movie/streaming/downloading for personal viewing a "Film" at home/cellphone etc
  • Who classifies and what moral values they have. Have seen rated 16 that even u feel ashamed to watch with other people of my early 30's.
  • How does this classification work exactly, do they view the "film" then rate? - You answered this satisfactorily - they view it first
  • When you rate a "film" 18 and above and bring it after the 9oclock prime-time news on saturday/friday who should control - Parent or those we pay to safe-guard morals in the society?
  • Why are they advising us as viewers, yet themselves can't regulate the media who influences a lot of people than dvd's on the street?  I watched media degenerate into this for the last 10 years and i didn't speak.- then who should or should not?
  • What of the evening explicit music shows - Does this fall under "film" - are they classified.
  • Are they mandated to control the online film/content/movies/streaming - if so, do they have the legal mandate or technical know-how in dealing with this?
  • Finally - i no longer buy DVDs and many of us here do not, other that music (local). When that era is done what will they be regulating? - The future like one said here is streaming....etc. Will they be able to controls anything, anything i mean?

Kind Regards,
Wilson./
