Most of the tools used in bioinformatics are opensource. together with using data mining and machine learning we could be able to make use of the health data we generate locally not only to identify unique trends but possibly even determine outbreaks before they occur. Its a pity that we dont have a strong bioinformatics group locally considering how many local and international research organisations we host. I found this interesting project / concept :
The Open Source drug discovery initiative <http://www.osdd.net/Home>
This is cool stuff! Combine this with the efforts of generic drug manufacturers, and we have a clear winner.
Check out a similar initiative: <http://tropicaldisease.org/>, and this page with a bigger list of others: <http://tropicaldisease.org/?page_id=42
