I suspect it may be worse than a broken filesystem. The fact that it don't even see the device as mountable mean he has mangled the first 63 or 126 sectors depending on whether the device is using 512 or 1024 sector size or worse it's a hardware problem If it's the later, every time he try to use the drive, he make it worse. Better to dd the content to another drive and try the fix there. William
