That's mainstream Jail-breaking you are referring to there! Some DIY firmware hack that does not even require you to open up the box.

For firmware versions greater than 3.5.5 you have to go into the theatrics of using some dongles & soldering bits of additional circuitry onto the console's main-board. I'm not sure if this has caught on locally; I just read about it in some PS3 fora.
