I usually unse UMTSMON and I can use any modem anywhere with PIN requirements. Plus it gives you a very nice interface with signal strenth indication.
never had problems using any modem on linux.

You will need the interface that comes with the modem to disable the pin, so you need Windows.
In ubuntu 10.04, you only need to install the usb-modeswitch and the Network Manager will sort you out with the rest (Broadband Modem).
