But I believe our solution is simpler:
A long time ago [before the Kenyan government failed in the 80s in its policing] - people did NOT have to live in the city [Nairobi] to live a comfortable life.
But the policing made things such that, all the major Kenyan towns remained stunted while over 90% of all economy was built around Nairobi..
Effect ? Everyone moves to Nairobi as soon as they finish high school and start the life of 'hussling' to see if they can at least etch a future.
This has created strife - such that a 2 bedroom house in a good area of Eldoret is less than Ksh. 5000,, a damn single room in a good area is around 10-15k in Nairobi.
In smaller towns, a salary of 3k p.m can sustain one to live from 1st of the month to end month without undue strife - in Nairobi, a salary of 10k would make one's life really hard [if you have to live on your own, let alone starting a family].
Remedy ?
The government should really devolve things out of Nairobi - different professions should be able to get jobs and be paid almost as well in smaller towns... If possible, the Presidents should rotate towns as they begin to serve terms ---
Example: if diplomats were to meet the President in Kisumu, what would that do to the hotel industries ? The roads ? Airport ? Looking at more developed countries - We do not hear of only Washington or Newyork - but we also hear of Los Angelos, Detroit etcetra In South Africa, Johannesburg is not exactly the Capital - the urban seeking population is shared out in other places like Pretoria, Capetown etcetra
