I think its a noble idea for the registration and i agree with Brainiac, these cost will reach us, the end users. An example Look at the MPesa registration it is semi automated and "physical id verification" is unavoidable. Can we be protected as they do this process, as it is now our data will be out there at the mercy of the integrity of these providers. my 2cents On Wed, Jun 23, 2010 at 5:25 PM, Wanjiru Njoroge <wanjirunjoroge@gmail.com>wrote:
My only concern, there's still no legislation on privacy and data protection and that is a lot of info they'll be collecting.

I think only filling the form is manual...from there you can automate

the idea is anything that involves "physical verification of documents" will have a MAN HOURS cost to do. Think of counting votes manually, and the cost of staff to do that. or simply voter registration process....

@ Brianiac I think you got it all wrong.
There is no additional cost. They just want to know who owns what line.
They already have that with Mpesa, zap ETC....and that did not translate to additional cost.
For me the Idea is most welcome...if you have nothing to hide.(that is).It will also help to establish the real market indicators for the Industry.

Friends , this is common practice in Europe as Wash aptly captured it, we must look at it from the point of Merit and demerits of not registering the Sim card, i suppose this was long overdue, i remember buying my sim in 2002 and i had to register, then the practice was discarded ostensibly to promote growth of the industry which has already taken place , i suppose the next step would be to manage this growth, which is why registration is key.
