The research team is primarily agriculture based...their analyst insists that Stata is for engineering and he hasn't heard of R.

From SAS website, it seems like it is at least a three tier system (server  to end user). My queries: 
  • Is there anyone out there that has interacted with SAS? 
  • Does it scale down or should I also include a server along with their request?
  • Are there alternatives that are not as large scale as SAS?
