@kuria
When you spend under sh 2,800 per month on elec units, you are not charged for VAT. If you go above that figure, you need to pay VAT. I was informed on this in a frustrated call to customer care after a bulk buying attempt. I'm not sure about month about paying for the monthly charges if you pay in bulk but the VAT (Very Annoying Tax) is enough of a deterrent for me.If you buy units via mpesa, you don't get the detailed report of how half your payment goes into "fuel index charge" and "forex charge".

@Bernard: If that's the case, wont KPLC loose money when ppl go on a frenzy to purchase Elec when the dry season is coming up? KPLC would pay Kengen extra if Kengen starts using diesel generators, or we all go dark?
@Brian: So, if one buy X units in January and the units last until June, when they top up in June, they will b charged the standing charges from January to June? Well, it does make sense to pay the standing charges at the next top-up since when they purchase the X units, they don't know how many months the units will last, therefore they cannot pay the standing charges at that time.
You pay standing charges from February to June, regardless of mode of top up.From a past experience I was not aware of the said fact and sent via MPESA. To which I didn't receive the top up digits.I called KPLC support and was told what I had sent was not enough due to the monthly standing charge. So I added more via MPESA and this is when my woes begun. I didn't receive the top up digits and I had to physically visit a KPLC centre with the MPESA transaction codes and amount for them to normalize the account.
A couple of questions:
What happens when they top-up via M-Pesa?
What if many ppl purchase power worth 2 years? KPLC wont have received standing charges worth 2 years from all those ppl??
Just to clarify the issue:
Let's say one buys 500 units, and they know their monthly estimate is 100 units. So they would have bought Elec for 5 months. Further, let's say they bought their 500 units at 10/-, so they paid 5,000.
On the following month KPLC changes the rate to 20/- per unit. If KPLC somehow doesn't adjust their pre-paid meter, They would still be consuming Elec at the rate of 10/- per unit for the remaining 4 months.

Wesley,
The beauty of prepay system is that the prevailing rates will apply at the time of purchase. There's no backend system that will adjust your meter../bernard
