Been using Microsoft's security essentials and have never been infected. plus its free and maintained by Microsoft.
@peter check out the link and see where ESET is placed. Can't vouch for the test but if they all did the same it's really not a contender. Plus you might be just lucky that your old virus def are sufficient since you get being attacked by old viruses (pun intended)
