What Microsoft and Google are trying to do is to disrupt each other to protect (and increase) their current and future businesses.
Google Apps keep MS from being too focused on Search and is also making Google money. Microsoft knows that they cannot beat Google in search any time soon (if ever) but need to keep them out of their (MS Office and Corporate) turf. After losing out on search (advertising which is bound to make Google more money than MS software licenses), MS is not taking any chances with Corporate Cloud Computing (SAAS). It will keep them ahead of Google (for a while at least) in terms of profits.
