I would recomend you disable NetworkManger for your wired interface, i have had similar problems with it and decided to use it for only DSL dialup, wireless and the USB dongles.
Enter your static IP's under /etc/network/interfaces as follows
iface eth0 inet static address XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX netmask XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX auto eth0
To disable NM from managing your wired interface, your network manager configs should be as follows. (/etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf)
[main] plugins=ifupdown,keyfile
[ifupdown] managed=false
Add your default gateway throught the "route" command
sudo route add default gw XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX dev eth0
Add your nameservers manually under /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX
Hope that helps, its what i did on mine although i put all these under a script in /etc/rc.local

Hi guys. Am trying to connect to the internet using network manager 0.7 on ubuntu 9.04 but i cant despite having an ip, gateway and dns . I try to ping and i get " operation not permitted". The browser reports it cannot reach the server. Despite this using applications like umtsmon or vodafone mobile connect for linux with a usb modem connects well. I had installed wicd to manage the wired and wireless connections but removed it in favor of network manager. I should also mention i had enabled nat (masquared) on ppp0. What could be the problem and how do i go around it?
