Smartcards and decoders are currently 'married' - I have a situation where I used to have 2 decoders in 2 locations and one smartcard and every time I move, I had to call Multichoice and give the locations. I ended up settling for 2 smartcards with 2 different accounts. That was two years back though, maybe things are changed. ./Ok3ch On Tue, Nov 27, 2012 at 8:51 AM, Tusker 21 <tusker212@gmail.com> wrote:
My 21 cents,
Brand new decoder the smart card has to be activated. What you get is the bouquet that you paid for plus the ZA free to air channels (Their KTN,KBC, Bla Bla......where some the speak their clicking language !xobito ). I guess what you are to find out is whether the SA footprint is covered in KE.
You also will be required to pay for your subscription in SA. Alternatively you could get someone to give u codes for reprogramming the damn PVR to work with a smartcard for KE. I know smartcards are replaceable and are programmed to work with your decoder.
Quick question though, do you think if you get a smartcard (with dstv premium) from one decoder and put it in another decoder it will work?

If you activate the service in SA, they will allow you to transfer it here. Brand new, you won't be able to. From a technical point of view, a decoder is just a receiver...

I always wonder about the logic of DSTVs business sin Kenya. In most countries, you find that the cost of decoders is very low of free to encourage subscribers to use the service they pay month fees for. DSTV charges exorbitantly for decoders and services.
In ZA, the cost of decoders and service is a fraction of what we have in Kenya. Plus it doesn't make sense to charge prices on a variable scale based on the USD rate (their rates always higher) rather than just use a fixed local currency. While I applaud them for being on the few South African companies to up their game, partly due to monopoly and lack of legislature to ensure fair play, they need to wake up to new realities. With faster internet in future, we would do away with DSTV and just go the IPTV way.
