usb modswitching on linux also worked, but this one took a bit of a procedure (for the vodafone 845 and huawei relatives) :
1. Install usb_modeswitch (via apt-get install) , and add the following line to your */etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules*:

3. restart udev for the rules to take effect /etc/init.d/udev restart
4. Thats it, you can now unplug and plug your huawei (aka vodafone 845) and it will be recognised as a 3g GSM modem.
5. If you need to access your memory card, simply mount usb storage from your android phone's notification area at the top, linux will switch the device from modem to storage.
6. GSM modem device is /dev/ttyUSB0 (am on debian)
