I concur and I have add that all of this telecommunication companies have their core business of offering voice calls. This business of offering internet solutions have come as weaning effort to try to increase their profit margins. Its evident that when there is high call traffic in a cell or sector all data connection crawl to a halt and is unusable. What will happen when voip will be wide spread and they are forced to offer free voice services over the weekend and at night coupled with the peculiar calling habits of Kenyans? For now any serious internet user should be having plans to get a more reliable connection from an ISP whose purpose is purely to keep bits and bytes flowing at a guaranteed speed and reliablity. Am not even sure this mail will be sent cause am using orange which has issues with most outbound traffic. Think about that. Telcos are just a quick solution not a lasting one. their grps has been google only service for the 3rd day running. I wish they would make some announcement to say when services will be fully restored. Good Luck Orange.. :-)
Which brings me to this question about GENERAL networks and operators : Is it the equipment or people running them? Is it shortcuts in implementation? Is it corporate sabotage by competitors or staff? Is it that we cannot sustain network reliability? what excatly is the problem?
From experience of setting up systems a few year back, we ran an intensive FreeBSD system on a network for almost 2 years without a single outage. I just dont get it. I think telecommuncation systems are the rot and most unreliable pathetic systems in the whole tech industry. Infact they are rubbish compared to systems much lower in the system chain. How is it that we can sustain networks for an uptime of 100% per year while the much much more expensive systems drop and collapse frequently. Amazing isn't it?
