This is old news, it has been like this since last year. And it's not just for GMail or Google Docs, it can be used across all their products. I use the 20GB subscription (USD5/yr) on Picasa as backup storage for my photos, but the storage is available on any GMail, Docs etc. You do need a fast upload speed, and an unlimited internet plan, if you're thinking of regularly backing-up/downloading your images online. Some have speculated that all this will someday lead to the "mythical" GDrive, in the same way the oft-rumored GPhone finally materialized.
