@aki all is not lost. Might i interest you in a locally "mined" product in heavy use down here? It comes from the coconut tree, it is virtually harmless to the environment and it runs like magic on any diesel engine.
It has the added bonus of exhaust smelling like pilau. :-)  Talk to me if you need a daily, weekly or monthly delivery.

anyway, onto smoing vehicles. I prefer troubleshooting like my high school power mechanics teacher taught me. first understand why its smoking, then track back from the exhaust. cleaning black smoke that has already gotten to the exhaust pipe is like sweeping dirt under the carpet.

so, onto the basics: what causes black smoke?
1: incomplete combustion
2: contaminants in the air / fuel combustion mix.

How can these happen:
1a) Incomplete combustion:
-> poor timing. (the injectors should squirt fuel at the right time to allow complete combustion by the time the cycle is complete.
-> too rich a mix (too much fuel )

possible culprits.
----------> injector pump.
-----------> injector nozzles.
------------>leads (copper leads could be damaged by squeezing)

2a) contamination:
-> bad fuel
-> bad air (air cleaner dirty)

Possible culprits:
----> your filling station.
-----> your fuel tank.
-------> your fuel cleaner.
--------> your fuel lines.
----------> your air tract.

...  more to come... tea break :-)

Its sad to see them leave.  I hope they license the technology to whoever takes over from them.  My forester used to smoke though not as badly, and guzzle like a problem.  Started using Shell V Power and the ride is much more responsive, doesnt consume as much as it burns more efficiently.  And did i say no more smoking?
