Hi Skunks, The customs regime in Kenya use what is called HS Standard Codes. It is a standardization by WTO detailing merchandise categories and each country assigns various rates to the merchandise. Bwana Lawi in the list has given a brief on the percentages. Kenya uses 6-digit HS codes. A country like USA uses 8-digit codes which are more detailed. However, the categorization of stuff is the same. The top level is a 2-digit HS code. You will be charged import duty depending on how the country has set duty for stuff in each code. That is why you sometimes pay 10%, 0%, 20%, 25% etc. The rest are as written by Bwana Lawi in the list. You have to find the HS code for what you are importing then if you have a "mole" at KRA, you will be able to know the import duty beforehand. I only got access to the document sometime back through WTO, otherwise KRA normally keep it their secret. Electronics normally fall between HS 70 and HS 90. I hope this helps. Thanks. In general if you want to save some change, just say the device(s) are 'used' to connect to the internet. On 31 October 2014 11:19, Thuo Wilson via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

Hi Skunks, I have persistently tried to look for information about custom duty rates (all rates charged on items into Kenya) but it has rather seemed
elusive. I
am interested in electronics, communication equipment like phones and other network gadgets, computers and lighting equipments (lanterns, lamps , and bulbs) and other hardware things like locks, taps etc) is there any one know or several source with latest information one can access this details. Please help
I do think, KRA/Govt printer has. I imported bulbs and was charged 25% + 16% by Posta - they have this huge book with every item category under the sun.
Kind Regards, Wilson./
