From what I learnt here recently, there is DVB-S (DSTv Decoder) and DVB-T (GOtv decoder) In both cases, the do Digital Video Broadcasting, but only through different mediums - (S)atellite and (T)errestrial. So I'd say you're as good as having a STB already, but I cannot comment of the FTA angle as I haven't a DVB-S :-)

I Think you can make this choice yourself by looking at the various options CCK recommends. Personally, I'd Go-ogle for the features each of them comes with so as to make a decision. Price comes last.

However, they published an article (starting Dec 5, 2012) in the Dailies, a copy of which is attached, which gives a much shorter list than the one they have on the website. I have attached a scan of that list for your reference- with a CC to you in case the listman thinks it's larger than allowed.
Previously discussed on this list, I believe the Gospell STB - http://goo.gl/dlVSp - has more features than the others in the market and is a good bet at only KES 6,500 (I just asked them!)
I am using GOtv one though, but I think you'll be happy with GOSPELL.
