The web developer has to up his game because every individual can now google and set up their websites, as such, the only logical growth path is to move up to coding, to develop the tools that make this possible. In my opinion therefore, the web designers move from setting up websites to creating template clubs, creating modules, components and building support business models around existing products like nuke, joomla, drupal etc. This in my opinion is a good thing since we now evolve to mass production with very low operating costs.
And the potential of selling all over. Look at template monster, joomlaworks, rockettheme and the likes.
