Here is what i do not get it: You can get a 3G modems going as low as 3k, (and coming down). With certain level of QOS, who would be able to compete withmobile phone companies? On 6/11/09, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:
KDN have a countrywide fiber newtwork and usually sublet it to other ISPs. KDN is the reason that Zain(insert new name here) are not aggressive in their data marketing, since they have a common minority holder( Sameer). somone was telling me that KDN sublet thir cable to ISPs who want to bridge their services between two major towns e.g. Nairobi & Kisumu.
IMHO, KDN is the guy to watch.

I don't think this will happen soon, even with multiple fibers coming to the country, especially if traffic to the hosted sites will be high.
As a compromise, maybe by then, one of the local ISPs will have got their act together and setup a countrywide Tier 2 link then maybe have a direct connection, via any of the fibers, to a Tier 1 backbone. Maybe then, one of the root name servers will be in Africa. If that be the case, you might be able to setup a local server farm and use that to offer hosting services, which will be competitive with the likes of 1and1.
However, using 3G (i.e the Nokia E61i or Huaweii modem) as the main link from your server to the internet might be a technically inferior solution to the local hosting problem.
My 2 cents :-)

I find this forum appropriate to engage in this discussion. Once again, if this has been done before, forgive me, im trying to get opinions and views, and possible scenarios. Please consider the following:
1: Fiber lands, Mobile providers offer unlimited band on 3G at monthly flat rates: say for instance 7.2M at Ksh2000 on a contention ratio of about 100 users. What possible scenarios exist for companies like access , wananichi and other providers.
2: Would companies like safari and zain (or Cain depending on who is next online) have capacity to roll out (and sustain 3G network) countrywide? -> this being from a business and not technology perspective. -> are mobile companies a real enough threat to kill traditional ISPs?
3: is it realistic to envision someday setting my webserver connected to an e61i or huaweii modem and sell realistic hosting from the comfort of my home in kajiado?
