Has anyone tested the flybox in Ngong' ? I curently use Safaricom Huawei E160, signal is good, some download speeds reach 2Mbps. Any suggestions on better options I can use within the Ngong' area? Thanks and regards, Ian On 10 January 2012 11:12, Watson Kambo <wkwats@gmail.com> wrote:
Hello Aki,
Are these speeds Average? does the session keep on breaking ... I usually use Safcom sometimes to connect on VPN but it will keep on dropping and its very annoying and it does not rec-connect I have to keep on rec-connecting manually.
Kind regards,

@Dennis, the new USB modem by Orange ( MF192 ) has been built very well. The installer Windows/Mac/Linux software does immediate tops-ups, balance checks and bundle purchases immediately. I've tested both on Windows and Mac and restricted use to only 3g, works extremely well. Orange have definately improved on network coverage because the same places am testing from had very small signal levels before. Now if only they can comeup with larger topup cards, its prettyy annoying to topup say 7,000 with seven cards!.
On the Orange Flybox, they have included an SMS interface in the Web Admin so you do not need to remove the sim card and manually top up. All you do is go to your browser, type in http://192.168.1.1 and enter with a password. Then, go to the SMS interface and you can top up. I used to find this restrictive in the earlier Safcom E960 modem but they also improved it on the B220 modem.
Orange also provide a normal RJ11 cable with the Flybox, so you can connect a normal phone to this line. The Flybox also has a single Ethernet port which one can connect to a switch. The Flybox is, IMO, using the same OS used in the E960/B220 wifi routers, but customised to Orange. These 3g routers perform extremely well under multiple sessions.
If anyone wants to use the Open 3g routers, my advice is don't. These do not have the processing capacity and give very awkard results.
Here are my basic amatuer tests on using the Orange Flybox 3g( HSDPA/HSUPA ):
- Part of Westlands = 450KB/sec download speeds while upto 90KB/sec on upload speeds. Signal level = full
- Part of Hurlingham = 400-500KB/sec download speeds while upto 100KB/sec on upload speeds. Signal level = full
- Part of South C = 400KB/sec download speeds while upto 80KB/sec on upload speeds. Signal level = from 70% to full.
- Planned testing in other areas too this week and next. This may just be also helpful in monitoring KPLC when the time comes.......
Rgds. :-)

My only issue with Orange is the menus for topping up and buying data bundles, they seem to be so error prone, with no confirmation of the choice you took.
- On one occasion, on EVDO, the signal was so weak that it took almost half an hour to top up and buy bundles, the issue ws tahts I would buy Ksh 850 for 1 GB , but by the time I finished topping up, I would have less than Ksh 800, and would need to top up again to buy the bundle. - Using the #123# menu, I mistakenly bought an unlimited bundle rather than an MB bundle, as the choices were 2 and 3 , and my fat thumb selected option 3 which doesn't even confirm the purchase , but acknowledges that you have bought "7 day unlimited Internet that is capped at 500 Mb for KSh 990". Orange also have a 500 MB bundle at Ksh 500.
The above though are policy issues which can be settled overnight. For the moment though, I have learned it is safer to call customer care , ask them to top up your line and to buy you a bundle.
