@Areba What you're asking for is similar to what i once posted on Skunks about the replicator. It's as utopian a dream as mine was put to be. which BTW, has already started as a sub project with a few individuals online who seem to know about what to do and how to do it so things are transpiring.. without additional funding. Thus my provocation on the Kenyan OS. BUT!.. considering what you've said, it's free software suites that do what the Adobe, Autodesk and Corel Suites do which now, looking at from a perspective on time and resource, can come in to play with ... why would someone create a software for use for free that will be benefited from by you as an individual while he / she are left broke on the pavement. There is a web model of the Creative Suite that is available from a third party but they get their funding with web marketing. The idea is sound, i see three options for it though. *1. *if we are comfortable leaving it as a localized free software and internationally gets to be a purchased software. *2. *In retrospect, it becomes a free software if someone is willing to donate a good amount of money for it's creation. *3. *Good Samaritans come together and kill the corporate market products by creating a Kick ASS suite of CAD, Design and Media Kit which costs NIL / Minimal amounts of money. I can get this project underway as my third for this coming year if there are people interested. I've set up a model plan for the OS which can be implemented in a similar fashion for the Design Systems. which is beneficial to the creators of the Application suite as a retail project. The Operating system as from my perspective is not a necessity like was said by others, however it is essential for our growth as a country in regards to a project that puts us on the INTERNATIONAL MAP ( reiterated from previous skunk responses ) It is a huge team project that can span over 2-3 years at the least but will be a great achievement for all Kenyans, not just skunks involved in this project as proof of our capabilities. I am now going to stick my foot far up my mouth with the following: If India can get all their superstars sold the US and still have a stron Economy and grow at the rate it is, disregarding the politics in Kenya, can we not as individuals hold stronger ground and get our own game going? There may not be visible benefits for the idealists and realists in the group and i'm ready for the headbanging there's going to be with banter about it but i'm kind of tired of paying for things that honestly are expensive. I'm tired of waiting for a day for support from an international firm, i'm exhuasted with the issues i hear about with certain operating systems and really, i'd like a change. Make some noise.
Here is the real spanner, 1. I am a typical Kenyan. 2. I DONT WANT A NEW OPERATING SYSTEM, i just want the existing ones to work better. I want to be able to run dream weaver natively on linux, i want autocad to run on linux. 3. I want GIMP easier than fireworks. And i want it to have a better UI. 4. I want more fonts, more drivers on the fly and i want to be able on the fly to rip dvd's without having to download and install handbrake. 5. Anything IT related in swa is just NOT COOL, patriotic maybe. 6. I want all of the software free, i dont want ADS either, just software thats lean mean efficient and does what its meant to be. There you have it, plenty to do before your wayward ken*x projects.

@Joshua and Wash, There was a project to create locales for several indigenous african languages, it ended on october 5. See more details here http://www.it46.se/afrigen/ and http://groups.google.com/group/google-africa-community/browse_thread/thread/...
Those locales will be submitted to CLDR/Unicode, OpenOffice and GNU C Library. The list of companies that use CLDR are the who-is-who of the global tech industry, according to http://www.it46.se/afrigen/about.php.
I had a chance to translate some words/phrases to my mother tongue, so in future, it might not be so surprising to find Af-Helledi as one of the languages when installing *nix :-)

Why dont we try and develop a Swahili Language pack for existing OSs like Ubuntu, FreeBSD and those other flavors, not only will it be relevant to our Kenyan market but it will make an inpact in the East African region too.
@Joshua,
Look at it this way: How may skunk(ette)s are fluent Swahili speakers? If none of them is, then there'll be nothing to motivate such a project. From my Kenyan experience, these kubaffs are contented with English. Please remind me of the times when Kiswahili takes centre stage in KE. Take for instance if someone were to post here in Kiswahili, would you read it? For me, I simply click delete:-)
The direction Michuki has provided seems a lot more viable, and doable.
