I totally agree with @TheMburu. The problem is with all of us. His point is that if the police are corrupt, its us who participate in that corruption, and two, they are Kenyans first before they become policemen. If our institutions are inept, they are surely run by Kenyans, not Ugandans! What he means is that we should all get our act together and stop pointing fingers. If we want to be a developed Economy/society, the first step is to start thinking like a civilized lot, all of us. Just take a minute and think about the times you have thrown litter out a moving vehicle, or jumped lights, or bribed a cop, or voted the wrong person into office because he/she is from your village, or... the list is endless. Its about us, all of us! You are the change you expect to see in the world. Evans On Thu, Apr 26, 2012 at 11:43 AM, Okechukwu <okechukwu@gmail.com> wrote:
That was well in Steve! I come from the direction where matatus are blocking the turn back before the roundabout and you find private cars now using the wrong turn just before the turn to head out in the opposite direction - shenzi type wote hao!

(sorry for top posting) I just had a conversation with a traffic cop at the Westlands roundabout, coming into town. I pointed out the fact that in the direction I was going, there's a slip road off the highway, just after The Mall, that matatus abuse instead of using a spacious bus stop that's provided. Now the pavement's almost gone. I also pointed out that in the opposite direction, an entire bus park was built a few years back, but the same matatus prefer to pick passengers on the highway, and on the right turn back onto Waiyaki way. The tailback these two issues cause just make the work of the cops at the roundabout harder, is there anything they could do about that?
Response: We're too few.
My answer to him got him thinking.
I told him these guys are being disrespectful of him and his kirauni. Conversation went like this: me: hauoni hii ni madharau? hata hawana heshima kwako? Hawaoni kirauni? Yani hawakuogopi? him: kweli mzee. hawa vinyangarika wataniona leo.
Off he went to solve the idiots at The Mall, and he sent one colleague to work on the guys on the opposite side. I think my contribution to Kenya today was to show him that there are law abiding citizens who value him and what he does, and we wonder why others don't.

Precisely my point, we are now getting used to bashing to get what we truly deserve, this if un-checked may end up like in india where rumour has it the one who hoots loudest has right of way in traffic, also imagine a case you have to bash the doctors to get attention. The propotion urgently needs attention and sensitization before it gets out of hand where it is now confrontational!

@themburu;
You could have said Kenya is a failed state. When everyone rises
against
everyone, surely! From where do we start the solution? Its not politicians, business people stealing from us, its not us conning our children and spouses daily.
Going home everyday, our traffic snakes on Jogoo rd like a large python (not our fellow skunk), slithering to the Eastlands. Now there are some green mathree's called Forward Travellers that will zoom on the opposite lat at some 140Km/h. Impunity. While all of us are on the snaking lane, someone is endangering the patrons. No one complains. Happy? Yes!
Another day im in a "Double M", my neighbour lady is sipping yoghurt, she is done and asks please open the window for me, that I oblige. She attempts to throw the packet on the highway below to which I retort politely - "mami, sasa nani ataokota hii takataka unataka kutupa nje?", looking startled, she asks, "sasa nitupe wapi?" I answer, "tupa chini ya kiti, the bus will be swept, then washed in the evening, all the dirt in the bus will be taken to a rubbish bin. Here, the dirt is safe". She smiled and threw her garbage under her seat. The garbage is safe.
See, we have failed in our small ways. Now we see the failure amplified in government and in our politics. We need to change. Here, and now, by complaining kabisa. Because we are a failed state when we watch failure and speak no more.
My two cents worth.

I agree with steve unless you really come out and demand for better services you are bound to remain with whatever poor services you get.
Many
Kenyans are competent enough to drive change and demand for good services however they are complacent or have a high tolerance threshold for suffering. E.g the other day Kimathi hse top floors burnt down coz the council fire engines are grounded. As kenyans shouldnt we demand the council to provide public services
