I think what Apple gets is the power of the sub conscious. The conscious mind sees a slightly pimped 4S but the subconscious will take in alot more once the phone is in your hand. I believe them when they say they change as little as possible because it already works as it is. the fine refinements in design and subtle changes will be noticed by the sub-conscious way before the conscious mind catches on. The realization that the phone is awesome when you hold it is what pushes you to buy the damn thing every year.
