I still dont get it, Isnt the number meant to be assigned by a third party to a new sim card? Assuming all equipment on the other end? If i exchange a GSM sim for a CDMA Sim and request the new provider to use the same number for my service, and then proceed to get new CDMA equipment (phone and all that), shouldnt it work?

CDMA  and  GSM  are  different  technologies  broadcasting  on  different  frequencies  so   the  answer  is  NO!
A  CDMA  handset  won't  even support  a   GSM  SIM  card
