It is a sad day indeed when we delegate parental responsibilites to the Government. Especially this particular one. Porn is not a good enough argument for me for GOK to control what I can and cannot access. It is my responsibility to control what my kids can and cannot access, and if I cannot I can hire someone to do it, or get my ISP to do it. In fact I happen to believe if responsible adults wish to view porn the Government should get out of their way. Let's not be hypocrites here. I have no doubt that the internet has a very grimy side to it and people need to be protected. What i disagree with is the notion that the Government is the best person to do it. People should dig a bit more to find out exactly what it is that the Chinese block. You'd be surprised. I personally find difficulty reconciling myself to the idea that with such a filter in place the Government can arbitrarily decide that youtube, twitter and gmail be blocked. Are you naive enough to believe the "we are just filtering porn" snake oil sold by the chinese government ?
Could that be "all" the Chinese govt also wanted filtered? :-) I am looking at the filtering from the perspective that while it's a very important communication medium, the Internet also has it's very ugly sides which people need protection from. It could be porn, it could be culture, it could be social engineering - everything has a -ve side. Perhaps I am just being naive, but I still want to believe the Chinese govt isn't more naive!
