The car hire companies have records of who had the car at that particular moment. The cameras are tagged with date and time. For private cars the owner is always liable so its up to you the owner to make sure whoever is driving your car abides

I may be biased to the 5 roundabouts I cross every morning and evening, but it seems the police actually do let the lights work independently - most of the time.

There is almost always a cop or 2 at the intersection, but not directing traffic. They only step in during early mornings and evenings - when traffic increases.

If you know you may commit a traffic offence, the best you can do is paste a fake number plate using a hard paper then you are good to go.... when the camera zooms on the plates.

Only that if you are caught, you will have to answer to double offences.

Please note that the traffic cameras within the Nairobi CBD are now operational.

 

This means that if you break any traffic laws (jump lights, make u-turns, wrong turns, overtaking in restricted areas, entering through no entry areas or pick at the wrong points) your vehicle registration plate will be captured by the camera and a warrant of arrest can be issued.

 

The cameras are never turned off hence do not be fooled by low traffic, early morning or late night hours, weekends, Sundays and public holidays. Please note that since there will be a camera record of all these acts, a not guilty plea in court may not stand.

 

You are expected to familiarize yourself and obey all traffic laws.
