I think Airtel do not know how to create relationships with  their clients at all.

The minute they increase the tariff and get to the rates of Safaricom, it will me mass porting of numbers …Worst they will call a press conference to announce an increase in rates( the only Telcom I have seen calling for a press conference to say what no one whats to hear)

Michael Joseph was right, it seems. Lower call rates does not mean higher call volumes.

Worst thing for Airtel is that they have now reduced the total market share in terms of revenue, with the reduced call rates.

Safaricom has increased it's rates, Airtel may not necessarily be able to do the same without losing customers.
