On a windows7 laptop, I easily achieve the same (and more [?]) using connectify. I doubt if there's a *nix alternative to connectify. The closest I've heard someone create an AP on ubuntu is: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/WirelessAccessPoint.
