For purposes of your ignorant client why don't you conduct tests on your application using a 3G modem, on the statistics tab of the modem app you should be able to see how many mbs you have spent and do your calculation against this. If you repeat several times using different scenarios -pay loads - you will know the bandwidth usage of your app..armed with the correct figures you can then go back to your client and educate them on the differences..

Alternatively as you are doing a demo with your client use 2 separate modems..for your app and for their fb and YouTube..check on the usage after and I bet they will get the point.

Hi Skunks,

For a new cloud product I am working on I would like to try and keep track the exact bandwidth/traffic used for each individual client.
This is particular useful in a scenario where the access to the system is through a 3G bandwidth bundle (i.e. Safcom), and the owner is blaming the system for "eating" his bundle when in fact an employee's Facebook/Youtube activity is to blame ;-)

To this end I would like to know a bit more about how the 3G traffic is measured and billed by local telcos, and I hope someone on Skunks have the insights needed:

1. Most billing is listed as per megabyte (i.e. 4kes per MB without bundle), but is it "per started megabyte", "per started megabyte per minute", or simply "per 1048576 bytes", or ?

2. When a bundle gives you 1.5Gigabyte does it then give you 1500 megabytes or 1536 megabytes as it should ?

3. Is the activity measured as the IP content actually transferred (the body of the TCP/IP package) or is the TCP/IP package overhead included ?

4. If it is in fact the full IP frame including overhead then what is the typical/maximum MTU size in a 3g network ?

Enjoy.
