Aye aye...
Since my post did not yield any fruits I decided to do a little digging and experimentation to find a solution. I'm sharing the solution here since it could be of help to someone else.
I am using an Android device so naturally this solution only works on Android - I will experiment on Apple iOS devices if someone tells me they have the same problem.
1.0 Dial *#*#4636#*#* 2.0 Select 'Phone Information' from the resulting menu 3.0 On 'Set preferred network type' select 'WCDMA Only' as opposed to 'WCDMA preferred' 4.0 Exit the menu while facing Mount Kenya and utter these words three times,"Uninterrupted 3G sasa tuko pamoja" 5.0 Surf away in peace...
Known Issue(from my experience): Since you have effectively chosen to use the 3G network ONLY, your device will lose ALL connectivity,voice and data, any time you move to a place that is not covered with 3G. In such a case, simply carry out the above steps but select 'WCDMA preferred' and your device will reconnect.
Disclaimer : You do this at your own risk, if you ruin your tablet or phone, you are on your own! :)

@Job
You see, it has nothing to do with people's 'too much expectations' and 'poor payments'! Users did not come up with the pricing, these MNOs did! Queen Bee even went ahead to call it 'Unlimited Internet'! If one pays
for
'Unlimited Internet' ,should they expect to get 16KBps? Moreover, Safaricom kept people guessing for close to two weeks on what was going on since the speeds were rubbish(forgive my French). Nobody said users could not or did not want to pay Ksh.23,000 to get a proper connection but would you seek to pay Safaricom that amount if they were offering the same services for Ksh.3,000 per month?

I think we are expecting too much and paying too little for it. Look at the Internet charges and associated speed on most developed countries. Unless you
are
willing to pay more for unlimited Internet its not possible for ISPs and Telcos to offer it. Looking at the cost of setting up 3G/4G networks and the limited radio resource its just hard to sustain the kind of data rates at the current prices.
