If opting Orange, go for factory built, the mini-SIM and micro-SIM are of different widths, with the mini-SIM being the larger, something I discovered the hard way, could ruin your phone. Just head to their GPO shop and buy one. As for Safaricom you can just get your existing one chopped at their care centers, haven't heard previously of the cut being disastrous, but for that you will need to get the micro SIM itself.

Steve,

I realize I wasn't clear. There is no cost to cut. The only cost is for the replacement SIM. I guess if you just go with the existing SIM card, the cutting is free. The reason I say 'I guess' is because every time I've gone to their shops, I'd also found it necessary to get a new SIM card due to some features missing on old ones... For instance, recently when I wanted to load credit on another phone using a recharge voucher, my SIM card app (is that what it's called?) could not accept 16 digits on the voucher/scratch card. A new SIM card was able to take the 16, while the old only accepted 12. So I almost all the time end up buying a new SIM card... confusion ilitokea hapo.:)

Safcom gives you the option for a factory cut (KES 200) or 'we cut normal SIM card for you' (KES 100 or 50 - I don't recall!)
I bought my first factory cut SIM from Safcom in 2010, IIRC. So they have always had them as I also remember referring some guys many times..

Last time I checked, only Airtel had factory cut Micro SIMs, Saf cut for you in their shop, Orange cut for you in their shop and charge you the price of a beer for it, cause you know, they are market leaders.

Or just get those factory-cut ones. QB and Airtel had them. I guess YU and Orange too....

After experiencing the issue last Friday and consulting a high ranking Nokia official, the problem is a SIM card that is cut too close to the edge when converting to a Micro SIM.

If you look carefully - you'll notice that your Micro SIM is snipped too close to one side, rather than spaced out evenly. You can have the Micro SIM replaced or try to adjust it in the slot.
